1.5 million MGs
1.5 million of the good, the bad and the ugly

Scary to be reminded of cars like the Maestro Turbo...
Oi! Nooooo!

I had one of them Maestro Turbos from new and it was very very very fast! Tickford (I think) had bolted down the suspension so it cornered pretty quickly too. It was a great track day sleeper car, but it used to eat Turbos.

I confess I shed a tear when it got nicked

Many Moons ago I had a 2.0 efi Maestro . I told my Mum (I was 18) I wanted a classic car, she liked the idea of a slow MG! I can't remember the 0-60 but it seriously put the wind up Renault 5 turbos. I have to confess to thoroughly binning and bending it. By way of respect British Rail and lately Rail track haven't repaired the fence I punched through sideways! AND I convinced the Copper that I was under 30 mph. Or else he saw that a young lad had wrecked his pride and joy and felt sorry...coppers aren't all bad you know!:-)
The MG Maestro was a seriously good car, I have had 4 of them, handle well and went like stink. They were a totally different car to a standard Maestro (except the shape!) A friend had a couple of the turbo versions, could get up to 300bhp reliably, problem with the front wheel drive at that level!
In the early 80s when living in Abingdon, me and me dad went to a special celebration day up at the factory – they'd created some space by shifting all the white-wall-tyred American spec LHD MGB's and there was one of these driving comps – you know, round the cones in reverse while holding a jug of water etc.
Well, we beat all the MGBs, Midgets etc in my mum's Mini Estate (M reg). She didn't know we burnt the clutch out nearly tho.
Bad thing was, they announced the frigging closure of the factory the next week ...
Those were the days ... life was so much simpler.

I do hope they're still going, and in British hands still, in another 70 odd years. I know that all mainstream, production car companies are global these days, but I'd like to think it's possible for MG to survive.
The MG guys are trying really hard to breathe some real character into the range, and I think most people will agree they're doing a good job. I do find the new ZT & ZT-T very tempting - IMHO has a really classic Brit look to it, like a sort of 'baby' Bentley.
