Clutch problem?

Driving home in my friends 2003 Jeep Cherokee last night and as we're pulling away we get a strong burning clutch smell. (He's not slipping the clutch, just a normal pull away!) Anyway, carry on along the road, and suddenly in third gear, looses majority of it's power, clutch starts smelling again and pressing the accelerator the car just revs, making little to no progress. The problem keeps getting worse to the point where we're travelling at approx 20 MPH in second gear, engine still revving highly, but making no progress speed wise. Clutch burnt out? Slipping? What to do?!

SOunds to me like the slave cylinder has gone, or the clutch has broken. Box out by the sound of it for diagnosis.

Sounds like a new clutch to me. Sorry.

Yep, sounds like the clutch has worn out. It's not likely to be the hydraulics, as you wouldn't be able to get the car in gear. If they fail, it wouldn't cause slippage (unless the master or slave cylinder pistons aren't releasing properly.

Being so sudden, I'd say a spring in the pressure plate has gone.
