Hi guys,

I am trying to establish what the voltage across the connector plugs for the boost and charcoal cannister solenoids with the ignition on (but the engine not running) should be. The car is a '93 SE and, according to the Engine Management Service Notes supplement, there should be no voltage in this configuration. Mine, however, reads 12V on both but obviously does not have much current because if you connect a test light to it or connect the solenoid it will not light / trip respectively. It seems that I have a partial earth but before I go ripping things apart is there any chance that anybody can check their SE for me to see if their's is the same?

The book states a procedure whereby you can short across two wires in the ALDL connector with the ignition switched on and the engine not running. Doing this puts the ECU into 'field diagnosis' mode and switches all the solenoid and relays etc on by grounding the earth' s in the ECU. When I do this it all works as advertised, but I do not believe that I should have any volts at all when the wires in the ALDL are un-shorted. I think that this is the reason why I am getting an intermittent code 26 problem. It is intermittent because it never comes on during high speed driving / motorway journeys but will trigger every couple of minutes during urban driving conditions. It is this that led me to look at the cannister solenoid in particular because vaccum levels etc are the main thing that would change under these driving conitions.

Thank you in anticipation. I really need some help with this one!!!

All the best,

Danny.

Sorry to have had to 'bump' this issue back to the top of the pile again but I would really appreciate an answer to this if at all possible. It would take 10 minutes maximum of somebody' s time to provide an answer to the question. The charcoal cannister solenoid is more difficult to get at, but at least if somebody measures the voltage across the boost solenoid connector with the ignition on and the engine not running it will give me a good idea of whether my problem is in this area. I have had the problem for over 4 months now and am running out of ideas. Even a local specialist was not interested in looking at it for me.

I have bought the Delco Electronic Fuel Injection Supplement and extra Electrical Section Supplement but am still having problems. I am a mechanical engineer, not an electrical engineer so, although they can assist, it is more difficult for me to understand the complexities of the wiring, relays and sensors etc.

Please help.

Danny

Now I am a Chemical Engineer. The first thing I ask before trying to answer a question is, "What are the symptoms of the problem?" Reading your email, we do not yet know what the supposed problem is. I ask, because I had a problem, Code 26, that the manual said might be at the carbon canister. As it turned out, that was not the problem.

So, what are the symptoms?
