Filmmaker Michael Moore made a 2007 documentary called "Sicko" that touted the superiority of Cuba's health care system and used it as a means of pushing ObamaCare in 2009. Based on the dictator's own words, that film should now be considered garbage.

A more pressing need here, before we tell the Castro-ites, "I told you so", would be to seize this moment to bring the island back into the mainstream of society, trade, etc so as to allow its people to begin leading a better life as quickly as possible. The very large amount of cash and investment from Florida's Cuban expatriate community alone would turbocharge Cuba's economy straight out of the gate.
A concern should be any possible folks waiting stage right that will off Castro for talking such things and taking power themselves. There are countless possible scenarios that could lead to this. Then again, there are those that stand to gain from a turn to Capitalism that may do the same thing; who knows?

The US Cuba trade embargo has been every bit as big a failure as Castro's economic experiment. Madness all round.A concern should be any possible folks waiting stage right that will off Castro for talking such things and taking power themselves. They would certainly need to control asset ownership for at least a decade, but it is a country that would be transformed in years if it opened up. The US would have to lift the embargo to get involved.

Keep them. Seriously though it is a crying shame that Cuba is in the position it is in. In some respects, culture, health, education, crime it is a rich nation. In terms of freedom to choose your own destiny it is very poor. Some good comments so far avoiding the ph tendency to go all Daily Mail on the subject. A transition needs to occur to improve freedom but in a controlled manner and not to the same extent as China where inequality is on the rise. Inequality is fine, it's just extremes of inequality that cause problems. The idea that all men should be equal is a dud. The new way of thinking should be make your money how you like, make more than the next man, but when your pursuit of riches results in true suffering for your fellow man that's when you need to stop.
