My first BMW (what to look out for?)

hey guys, i'm looking at getting an E36 318 in around 6 months time and was wondering if anyone knows what to look out for when buying one and if anyones got a buyers guide that would be fantastic as i want to get the best possiable one for my money and i don't wanna get a dud.

Also, what are running costs like, fuel, tax, etc, i have had a look, but what are the real world costs? would be most appreciated =)
