MK1 Golf GTI

Hello PistonHeads,

My name is David and i am 21, :P and this is my MK1 Golf GTI 1.6, i just got her two weeks ago and i love it! 28 year old car with 140,000 miles on the clock and drove her from Skegness to Scotland without a problem! Plan is to get her original, keep her standard. A few dings and scratches and squeaks i need to care of. Car was resprayed Mars Red in 1995. This car was featured in Practical Classics Magazine and i am trying to locate these issues. This is my weekend car since i am off at Uni. I have a reason to go home now, except for free food!


Will get the DSLR out for some photographs next weekend!

Looks like a nice tidy Mk1.

My first Gti was a 1.6, but in silver, cracking car.

looks nice and straight. the 1.6 is the best one IMO, has a shorter ratio box giving slightly better acceleration and the 1.6 seems to like being revved more

i like it, a friend of mine had a mars red 1.6 GTI its one of my favourite colours for the mk1

Get some more guages and put them in the centre console.

I really miss my Mk1 GTi, it used to get loads of positive attention, unlike the Elise I was running alongside it

While I agree they look great as standard, for me, it needs two things to look perfect - lowered slightly and sitting on some BBS wheels, or P-Slots. Personally, this is pretty much spot on:

I was just thinking the same thing - it's like knowing that they're under 21 or over, say 70, adds context.

Looks lovely, even the drivers seat doesnt look like it has taken much abuse considering it has 140K on it.

Some Campaign P Slots would be a nice addition and in keeping with the age/originality

Take good care of it. As everyone has said, unmolested Mk1s are pretty rare now. That's a good one, in the right colour, with the right engine, and in a few years the value of it will get silly.
