Do they All have Vernier Pulleys??
Discussion
Hi,
Iam currently stripping bits off my Griff 500 motor prior to pulling it out. I have pulled the timing cover off and found this behind it

Do they all have this vernier wheel and duplex chain setup or is a non standard part/upgrade? The Rover used to use a fibre toothed timing cog, but dont know if TVR did this differently.
Mines a 2000yr Griff if that makes any difference.
One other thing is that the chain seems to have quite a bit of slack in it, more than I would have thought healthy and enough (I assume)to affect the timing.
Cheers
Marty

Well, I can confirm my engine, which started life as an intermediate 400, had an all steel single row morse/silent chain set up, with much more slack than that evident on being stripped.
Dunno how many miles yours has done but not a major drama to change as you're already in there provided you're comfortable with the job and have the kit to time up the cam. Anyone worth their salt would originally time a vernier set up on the advanced side of any available tolerance to allow for chain wear retarding timing as the miles go by. If longer duration cams are used, exhaust valve to piston clearance can get pretty tight and it is well worth checking the timing is actually what it should be...
