Why did my gearbox break??

Myself and 5th gear decided to part company just outside Prague last week. We'd been together 88000 very happy miles, but all of a sudden one of us left the relationship abruptly. £800 and 4 days later and I have a new and growing friendship with a brand new 5th gear.

But for the life of me I can't work out why 5th sheered. I have the damaged parts the the shaft is ok, but the 5th gear sheered on the leading edge to where the shaft goes into it. Lost a few bolts as well by the looks of it.

The vehicle was bought new so I know it's history, serviced every 10k (2k shorter than it needs to be), generally does 65mph on cruise all day long, is 4 years old although the bulk of that mileage would have been done in 12 months over the 4 years of you get my drift. The vehicle has never been abused as such (rarely go to 4k rpm, and only occasional stray into 3k, most of the time it sits in the 2k range when out and about, but 1-2k when in town).

It's a diesel van, and rarely, if ever gets loaded heavy either.

So all in all, I'm lost as to why 5th went all of a sudden.

Anyone any ideas?

Yup fiat is just about enough said. Had a stilo seven or eight years ago. In 30000 miles blew up 2 gearboxes and a diff. All at under 40mph. Cost the stealer best part of 6k in invoiced parts and labour.

Never have and never will buy fiat again.

Had a look at the time but nothing specific so I'm not convinced this is a Fiat thing.

Although the engine oil has been regularly changed the gearbox oil probably hasn't been. A lot of cars don't even have it as a service item now. That maybe part of the reason. Otherwise it could be a manufacturing issue or just plain bad luck.
