Dear Sirs
Now that Shrewsbury’s new static speed cameras are going live I would like to plead with parents to make sure children take great care in their vicinity.
Many pedestrians are unaware that when drivers approach a speed camera, and unsure of the speed at which it is set to flash, they will continuously check and re-check their speedometer several times in fear of a trivial increase in speed resulting in a prosecution. This creates a temporary reduction in their usual level of observation and reduced awareness of inattentive pedestrians who may absent-mindedly step into the road.
According to government figures an errant pedestrian hit by a car doing a legal 30mph has a 45 per cent chance of being killed, most of course would be very seriously injured or disabled.
Away from the speed cameras drivers will be better equipped to anticipate your child’s intentions and react accordingly.
Yours faithfully
