Hiya,

Looking to buy a Scooby 2.5 WRX STI. Not sure what is the best/most reliable variant. Saying that there are many performance upgrades out there for the 2 litre versions. Is it worth spending the extra and gettinfg a 2.5 or even PPP??/ Cheers

The hawkeye 2.5 Sti is a fantastic car and highly recommended.

think they were 06/56 plates, power will be 280ish, torque the same from memory.

The PPP is worth it for the exhaust and sports cat. then its a straight remap to 340bhp and 380ft/lbs

thanks m8. Probably not too many around themn. People tell me to pick up a standard version say a 2 litre and take it to Bailey Motorsport for power mods. Are the Scoobys reliable or prone to any sig. faults?????

The 2L Sti 8 is a stronger engine, but the 2.5 is a much nicer engine to drive because you have loads of torque.

Not familair with Baileys.

Either way you go you can squeeze almost as much power and torque from a 2.0L as you can from a 2.5L with the right mods.

Although there's no replacement for displacement there's a lot you can do a lot with a 2.0L and as Vixpy says, the 2.0L are much stronger than the 2.5L. It realy depends on what you want to do.

If you want a torque monster go for the 2.5L.

Best version has to be the Spec D!

I've had a 2.0wrx, 2.5 wrx with ppp and now the 2.5 sti. Definitely worth having the 2.5 STI, good torque and as has been mentioned, I understand a smimple remap takes it to 340bhp+

Plenty of 2.5 STi's around.

Get yourself an unmolested example and do your own mods. You'll get much more satisfaction from the car that way. Also you will gain some experience for yourself, and it's more likely to have been looked after and not stressed, even when driven with some spirit.

Get a modified one and likely it's been driven fairly hard from time to time. These engines aren't as strong as the 2.0L and 350-400bhp in a 2.5L stresses the engine out more than a 2.0L.

I appreciate that's what they are there for but it's nice to get a car that hasn't been thrashed to within an inch of it's life!! As soon as you start modding and getting more power the more you will press the loud pedal. It's very addictive!!

You'll need a bit more than a simple remap to get it to 340-350bhp like a proper exhaust system, high flow air filter and uprated fuel pump. Then you'll see some decent BHP with a remap.

Can’t say I entirely agree with "a modified car = thrashed car". My car has been sensibly modified and it rarely gets thrashed. I drive quite slowly to be honest and find that the car needs less welly with the additional power and torque as you don’t need to change down to overtake etc. I was even overtaken by an old lady in a Micra once, she looked quite put out that I wasn’t travelling at maximum pace, was quite funny!! I do agree you have to be careful with modified cars and ensure things have not been done on a shoestring.

As for which car, what is your budget? There are some great limited edition hawkeyes with 350bhp out of the box. A good example of the spec-c can be picked up easily for under 18k. It’s lighter and more focused than the UK Sti and has the stronger 2.0 engine. If i had my budget again from 4 years ago, today i would be buying a used spec-c.
