Single turbo conversion

after a prolonged use of my car as an everyday mule and then a stint this year of blowing silly money modding my car down an already proven route I have decided to go my own direction and do my own single turbo conversion.
You may ask why?
Well I had the car remaped earlier this year and pretty much immediately my big ends decided to call it a day so I decided to rebuild it to full spec with new crank mountune rods forged pistons heads cams etc etc etc, fitted larger turbos oil coolers and uprated rad, even took the modded 5 speed out and put a fully modded 6 speeder in with AP paddle clutch... however a stupid error has caused a head failure and another rebuild so I never got to see the engines full capability. This rebuild is currently underway and its costing another fortune
Anyhow over the last 6 years I have done plenty of research into the twin turbo application for my V12 project and Im convinced its the way to go, however for a V6 I don't think its quite as clear cut and I have recently been thinking that a single turbo might actually have some significant advantages. After speaking to a few other people and not being one to shy away from doing something stupid I have decided to it.
So whats does this mean?
Well I need a new intercooler (or mod the new pro alloy one if i dont sell it), new roller bearing trick single turbo, whole new exhaust system to my own spec with dual external wastegates, Im even going my own route on the clutch and am developing a triple plate 7.5 inch unit that i was going to use on my GTT and is rated to 750ftlb. this will allow me to halve the weight of my existing lightened flywheel/ paddle clutch. I've even cut the rear of my chassis off and have modified the engine mounts.
Also toying with the idea of an all new inlet manifold to help the engine rev.
I will try to put up pictures as I progress and as spec becomes more firm

It's the cheaper option but it may be worthwhile speaking to those who have messed about with tuning Skylines. The power/torque curve of a big single may not be to your taste...

Good luck with the project Andy, after going through it once myself I know how frustrating it can be which makes it all the better when the results blow you away. can I ask what ur reasons for single turbo are? and what are you looking to achieve IE power output. Surely having one large turbo will create loads of lag?You may ask why?

Yes, it took a hell of a lot of getting used to after driving a TVR Chimaera for 4 years.

It was an imported Skyline that was used for drag racing in Japan. Certainly interesting once the turbo kicked in, mind, and not a bad experience for the £13k I paid for it... until the gearbox gave in. 
If I'm honest, however, it was no quicker than the original Noble M12 and I would take that in preference if I had had £45k at the time...

The optimum technique was to rev it up to 4500rpm then smoothly engage the triple plate clutch so that you got as much power as possible without bogging down which was just what I needed on the commute through stop-start London traffic.

andygtt, all of the parts you need for a tried and proven single turbo application for the Noble are already available from TurboHoses in the US. There are several cars here that have already been changed over. TurboHoses has already done all of the research and legwork to make this application work and work well. You would do well to chack out what they have done before trying to do your own trial and error R&D. IMHO.

Hi Gadge, yes did ring that guy, sounded very promising... need to work out if the purse strings first as i've had some bad news in other area since then 
a poorly spec'd single turbo will without doubt be very laggy, i'm hoping we get it right so at worst its no different to my current engine... time will tell.
Not sure on power, I have spec'd the turbos to be able to produce significantly more than my current setup... again time will tell what numbers it does.

Dam you beat me to it! lol. Hoover and turbo hoses should beable to sort you out with all the bits you need andy. thye have a customer with a race car that uses one of their single turbo setups. work pretty well for him! Edited by caccobra on Tuesday 14th September 12:37

I did speak to hoover and he was very helpful and clearly knew his stuff, i'm taking a lot of his advice but am also going to do things slightly different to him.his cars prove that a single turbo car doesnt mean laggy
if someone is feeling brave you could go for twin compound turbochargers
no more lag than a stock turbo and 50 psi boost availalble !
I actually think a single turbo conv is a good idea
move the heat away from behind the driver and not laggy with 3.0 litres to spin the turbo up
650 - 750 bhp should be fairly easy as hoover has already shown
