100 mile daily commute - what car?

I will be starting a new job that is 50 miles away from my home, the journey is 100 percent motorway, my question to you all is what car would you recommend for the journey?
The budget I have is up to £5k, requirements are as follows:
Must be good on fuel
I don't care how it drives
Must have four doors (possibly with ISOFIX fittings)
I would prefer an automatic

VW Passat B5.5. You could get a good low mileage late model with the 130BHP PD engine which is economical and punchy when required.
I bought mine for the same reason as you, and they are very good at wafting along in comfort on the motorway.
You will beable to get one with good spec for that budget too.
My one returns around 56MPG (indicated) at a steady 70MPH on the motorway and has been very reliable, it's now on 105000 miles with nothing required apart from a temperature sensor and servicing.
I bought mine for the same reason as you, and they are very good at wafting along in comfort on the motorway.
You will beable to get one with good spec for that budget too.

That commute really requires, 20k on a 535 BMW ideal!
Or..........depending on how long you envisage the employment lasting. £3k on late 70's Roller/Bentley and £17k fuel war chest. Turn up on day one smug and dress "Old Money" expect promotion in year one. Loafing 101, your first lesson has been free further are by prior arrangement.

Nice oneYou want Diesel Auto and wafty, all the things a true petrol head would hate. The considerations on top of fuel are comfort so a comfy seat, a good stereo and good AC, I was doing 80miles a day for several years and if you hit traffic you want to be able to relax and chill as much as is possible.

If the traffic's good you probably wouldn't get much benefit from an auto on the motorway, surely? Just fifth (or sixth) gear all the way... I'd love a smooth-shifting auto in town though. It took me over an hour to do 7.5 miles this morning, creeping uphill on the clutch most of the way.
