Carburetor for Mk1 Escort

Hi,
I have a Ford Escort MK1 ( Kent 1600cc engine) I would like to fit with a new carburetor. I have had very bad experiences (mechanical carb problems) with second hand carb's in the past and therefore I am not interested in purchasing second hand carbs; even if they are rebuilt.
A new Weber 36DCD7 (or even a 32/36) will be too expensive (cost almost as much as a new small motorbike).
I have heard a rumour that one can fit a new replacement Golf MK1 carb.
Has anyone tried this, and is this possible? I am strongly considering it, but am unsure regarding how to go about doing this. If possible I would like to avoid having to make lots of modifications to get something to work...
Alternatively, can anyone help me with suggestions on what carbs will work on a Kent engine at a reasonable price?
