Ive been lurking for a long time but have just read this in the local rag and its got me thinking:

http://www.thisisnottingham.co.uk/news/Surgeon-car...

There are clearly many areas for comment here however my GF is a nurse and commented that firstly a urologist wouldnt be doing appendix surgery and also no operating is done at night unless for really big life saving procedures

Something doesnt feel right here
What am I missing?

Or is this a case of journalistic licence?

Quite a lot of journalistic license

But he claimed Legion Group plc didn't check whether it was a staff car – even though his registration plate looks like the word 'surgeon'.

Emergency appendectomy is a life saving procedure isn't it? GF training opportunity?

Yup. My old boss nearly died when his appendix went and my missus had an appendectomy in the dead of night. It's a common operation but usually carried out as an emergency in a very life-threatening situation. Don't confuse common with routine, it's not something that can be scheduled.

I reckon your (the OP's) know-it-all girlfriend needs to hit the books a little harder.

not sure, it didnt immediately set off my bullst alarm, it does say that:
"He received a call at 10pm about a patient with appendicitis at the City Hospital requiring emergency surgery."

and i dont really know whether a urologist would be called to do an appendectomy but urology is largely to do with that area of the body, so at least he would know his way round, and maybe he was the only surgeon on call that night?

I got a parking ticket at the same hospital once.
That was in 1999.

I put it in the bin and haven't heard since.

Oh, he was clamped.

"I can't believe they didn't just squint at my registration from 60 yards, and leave the clamp off"

"I even carry a stethoscope with me permanently to avoid having to display the permit I agreed to"

Mr Bragg said he pays £220 a year for a staff parking permit, but on this occasion forgot to display it.

My car is easily recognisable and I frequently park in this car park.
This guy sounds like a muppet to me. So he knows he needs a permit, admits he forgot to display it yet thinks the fact he parks there a lot and has some dodgy number plate should excuse him. "Surgeon didn't display permit and subsequently got clamped by external parking company in accordance with hospital parking policy" isn't quite as sensational I suppose.

Course he's a muppet. Called out at 22:00 for emergency surgery, he probably wasn't concentrating enough to display his £220 parking permit, his mind was probably wandering around dross like performing emergency operations.

After all, the rules are the rules, and must be obeyed, to the letter, at all costs.

A Nottingham University Hospitals Trust spokesman said: "A member of staff had their car clamped after parking in a public parking space without displaying an appropriate permit.

"This is normal practice. The car was close to the security office, which is staffed 24 hours a day, so in practical terms, it would have been unclamped very quickly if necessary.

"The Trust has recently made staff aware that it is tightening up enforcement of inappropriate parking by staff and patients/visitors at both its hospitals. Cars parked outside the marked spaces can often impede emergency vehicles."

Any reason why he couldn't permanently display the permit? The bloke's a tosser.

The fact he decided to take it to the papers rather than take it up with his employer is why I think he's a muppet.
