Punto Problem With Gears

Evening all,
Earlier on i was out in my car 1.2 ELX Punto Yr 2000.
I went to click it into reverse & lost all drive in reverse, however i was still able to drive the car home & select 1st,2nd,3rd & 4th.
It's almost like all the gears have shifted over 1, so 1st is where 3rd should be if that makes any sort of sense?!
Now as i know absolutely nothing about fixing a car i'm after a few suggestions as to what it could be as i don't want to take it into the garage blind tomorrow.
All jokes aside please about it being Italian & crap etc as it was all i could afford to buy & insure @ the time.

It's highly likely that it's part of your gear linkage that has snapped, and the gearbox is still fine.

I've looked online & that's what a few other sites seem to think, is that sort of thing expensive to fix?
I don't want to feel like i'm getting ripped off that's all!

I wouldn't have thought so, it might be something that could be clipped back and a bolt replaced for a few quid.
It might need a new couple of cables, or a bracket somewhere, but none of it should be expensive.

I'd have though 50-60-ish, but hard to say.

FWDs usually have a couple of cables or levers that pull on an arm on the gearbox, one end has either popped off, or a cable snapped.

It's 70 quid a cable!

Makes you wonder how much a strong one would have cost!

Yet again PH was right, the garage next door it was one of the cables.
They're going to do me a bit of a discount aswell as my dad put's a lot of his company vans & vehicles through them.
