Modernization and progress made this neccessary, but sad nonetheless.

I always get the impression that the Americans aren't all that sentimental about things in the way the Brits sometimes are.

Still, if it is no longer needed, I suppose it has to go.

Actually, we have very strict laws to designate and protect structures or places of historic value. I suppose the various bits making up this situation did not lend itself to that. It has not been torn down yet (I believe I misspoke); therefore, it is possible they may preserve a portion of the structure as a museum.

Good to hear. We have a system in the UK called "Grading".

A Grade 1 Listed Building should never be knocked down or even modified
A Grade 2 Listed Building can be modified but only if the modifications are in sympathy with the original building.

Here at Farnborough most of the old Research Establishment buildings have been demolished but a number of historically important buildings such as the original wind tunnel and the Royal Flying Corps 1 Squadron building have been listed for preservation.

Maybe that is too recent, on a Time Team dig in Maryland they were sifting the soil to a OCD level far more than any UK dig.

Historic items that predate the U.S. are also carefully protected. An example are two mounds that are in the middle of the Louisiana State University campus. They are believed to be prehistoric Indian mounds that have decayed items inside carbon dating back 6,000 years. They are still being investigated.

Probably the contents of a student's teepee.

I'd were protective biological hazard clothing if I was one of the archaeologists.

hehe It is intersting seeing that the going theory has been that our "Indians" came over the land bridge from what is now the west coast, yet, we are discovering relative metropolises in the Southeast U.S. dating back 6,000 years.
