I can drive from one side of the country to the other without a map.
I can find places having seen their location just once on a map.
I always know what direction I'm pointing going.
I never get lost.
I have a tremendous ability to know my 'arse from my elbow'.

The missus knows this, and has always marvelled at my ability to not get lost, anytime, anywhere. This probably has quite a lot to do with being a cartographer most my adult life, and having an unhealthy interest in maps and geography as a kiddy. I can look at a map and commit a route to memory without even thinking about it.

I dont even bother carrying a road map atlas in the car.

Where as she still gets lost in our home town.

So, its my birthday today, and she bought me a SatNav.

Bless her.

Speed cameras?
POI's?
Distance/time remaining?

I'm pretty much the same as Corsair but find the sat nav handy for speed cameras and time to destination although I am also pretty good at knowing the latter without sat nav.

Happy Bday Corsair. party

Speed cameras never bother me. I drive sensibly, and obey speed limits of 40 and below. All other limits are observed to within reasonable percentages meaning I have enough time to react to any potential speed trap or am within tolerance.

POI might come in real handy for taking a pootle though.

I generally know the distance remaining (roughly) so can use my brain to work out (roughly) how long to get there. Never in that much of a hurry in a journey that it matters that much.

I won't claim never to get lost, but I do love maps and much prefer them to Sat Navs. In July I drove solo from Bath to Chamonix, did a few routes around the Mont Blanc massif and a non-peage route back to Calais just using a French Michelin atlas.

For the price of the SatNav she should have got you a few lap dances instead as you seemed to like that more tongue out

I hate the whole dumbness of sat nav users, SWMBO has an Aunt who isn't 60 yet but gets lost when trying to follow her sat nav, so badly lost in fact that she used it for a 20 minute trip to Middlesborough that she had done 100's of times before, 3 hours later she returned home. After having failed to understand the sat nav directions she drove round in circles while it tried to get her to the shops but she gave up and drove home with it turned off.

Happy Birthday

Happy birthday fella...

They do struggle with presents. (Bless 'em.) Blokes are notoriously bad to buy for.

When I comes round to Christmas or my birthday, I'm always asked what I want. I went for "surprise me" a few times, and I was surprised how rubbish the presents were.

Now my choice is invariably to get gift vouchers from friends and family, a special blow job from the missus, and the chance to choose what to do for a day out instead of a party.

Maybe I'm getting old, but at least I now enjoy these arbitary calendar celebrations.

Spot on. They do struggle. Generally, stuff I want, I buy for myself.

And cheers for best wishes.

Thinking about it, someone will probably buy me a Sat Nav for Christmas. I got rid of the car a couple of weeks ago, since we now live in Central London.

I'll also get a Stig biography, the latest Clarkson book, and maybe some socks with the days of the week on the bottom of them.

Happy birthday!

I never got lost, but I did stop "investigating alternative routes" when I got a SatNav hehe
