Hiring models, who supplies the clothing makeup?
Discussion
As above, saw some great shoots on PH, one pic has me asking who supplies the clothing makeup for amateur models.
The pic was of a lady dressed in what seems Victorian garb, could have been Goth.
Do you state I'm doing a Wild West Shoot, bring your pantaloons six shooter long-johns and some deep red pale powders.
Suspect you'd have to rent costumes, then sizes styles colours become a factor.
Thoughts please.

Established models will have a good range of clothing and accessories that they can bring to a shoot. However, if you are hoping to do something a little out of the ordinary, it wouldn't be unreasonble to expect the photographer to meet the cost of hiring/buying items as required.
After all, it would be a little unfair to expect the model to meet the cost of something specifically for your shoot that she may never use again.

Thanks for you input, I'd love top do a shoot I have some ideas that have been in my head for years would love one day to put them to camera, unfortunately i'm crap at as well. Have thought of getting a pro-semi to do the shoot but then feel their input would overide whats in my eye.
Do models normally do their own makeup? one day I want to realise this ambition, i've seen similar but still not what I wish to see if that makes sense, Japanese warrior type stuff.
how much for horses?

A Makeup Artist can help things along quite a lot, saves on retouch time. Some might not make the model up as she wants or would normally have her makeup, but often it's done for a reason rather than a night out on the piss.
There are some considerations when using makeup especially with regards to what flash does. If you look at the middle of this models forehead, I had some issues in post processing where the makeup was reflecting quite heavily

Is it a paid shoot or TFP/CD?
Why not find a pay for (our split cost of) a Stylist?
Thanks, Nolar, if I ever did this (a life's ambition) it would be paid no doubt over many many sessions. Why not find a pay for (our split cost of) a Stylist?
Would be a major learning curve for me to see how Models styling lighting cameras would react to direction, ie, wear this and this not that, would like to use the same set of workable models over a 12+ series, no doubt plenty of criticism would flow my way.
Its just that I have these images that I've not seen yet. More of a semi pro hobby, One day eh!

Get a photographic stylist (who will sort out locations / props) and a make-up artist.
Thanks for that, great idea! What I think I could do is create a simple storyboard that would keep things flowing and progress in a business like manner. Not so much about money more about the style ambiance mood lighting.
At first I would probably like to get shots in basic positioning framing lighting when happy proceed to selected models props and costumes styling.

I think the photo/s you are referring to were by Pete Baraka, the models were Goths that he met during the Goths Whitby Weekend, they love being photographed as they have taken a great deal of time and money to acheive the look. He has since worked with some of them and the photos posted were from those sessions - you might guess, he's a mate of mine. To go that elaborate in costumes for an normal model would be difficult and to match up to your vision would mean that you would have to provide the costume. The pic was of a lady dressed in what seems Victorian garb, could have been Goth.

Nick BB did a shoot a while back where, IIRC, he provided the BEA stewardess uniform and shoulder bag for his model (stunning photos from it!)

When I started doing period shoots with models I quickly found out that their idea of "Sixties American" and mine were not the same. So I had to become my own stylist for shoots. I buy genuine period clothes on ebay and then sell them on ebay when I've used them in a shoot, although I have a suitcase full of stuff I should shift. I always have to get the model to bring her own shoes though. Now that I'm doing more 50s/Burlesque shoots I tend to use models/dancers who have all the gear already so it's much easier.
As far as makeup/hair goes I much prefer to work with a model who can do a good job on her own as bringing an MUA/hairdresser on board is an extra person or two to organise and will add a couple of hours to the shoot time as opposed to the model turning up ready to shoot. I'm partly constrained by the fact that I mainly shoot at blagged locations so sitting around for a couple of hours isn't a good idea. I have had the MUA and model come to my house first to get ready then go out to shoot. I'm sure the results would be much better if I had the time/money/location to have an MUA.
I've been to shoots for big magazines and there are about 25 people on set, I have to try and distill all of those roles down to me and the model most of the time.
