Shelby Unveils 800bhp 'Super Snake'

In a move that must surely push the very limits of the rugged-but-charming Ford Mustang's chassis, legendary tuning outfit Shelby American has revealed the Super Snake, an 800bhp aftermarket performance package for the 2011 Ford Shelby GT500.

Now, we're told that the 2011 Mustang GT500 is a far more sophisticated beast than the 2010 GT500 car we got our hands on a little while back, but it's hard to imagine a car with a live rear axle and two-wheel drive coping with 800bhp.

We haven't spotted any performance figures, but we presume that, should you manage to stop it wheelspinning, the Super Snake is pretty darn fast. For the less-than-certifiably-insane buyer, Shelby is also offering the Super Snake in a less-mental 750bhp guise, and even an almost-sensible 660bhp format.

Aside from being the car destroying a set of rubber every time it pulls away from a set of traffic lights, Mustang spotters will be able to identify the 2011 Super Snake by a new anthracite wheel design, white stripes and new side scoops (though these are optional).

Beyond this, the Super Snake gets:

Ford Racing handling pack including dynamic adjustable dampers, lowering springs, tuned stabilizer bars, and front strut tower brace
6-speed manual transmission with 3.73:1 rear axle ratio
Shelby/Ford Racing supercharger upgrade producing over 660 HP and 590 ft.-lbs. of torque
Either a Shelby/Ford Racing or Shelby/Kenne Bell supercharger kit producing 750 HP with upgraded drive shaft, billet twin 75mm throttle body and exclusive badges
Optional Shelby/Kenne Bell 800 horsepower tune on pump gas
Borla exhaust system
An optional Shelby / Eibach handling pack is also available
Shelby-designed Alcoa 20-inch wheels in durabright or anthracite
Short-throw shifter
Forged Shelby / Baer brakes with 6 piston calipers and cross drilled / vented rotors
Front brake cooling ducts and behind the door side scoops
Unique fiberglass hood featuring classic Shelby design and pins
Shelby signature Super Snake stripes in either matte black or matte white
"Shelby" lettering across the rear deck lid
"Super Snake" vehicle badges and official Shelby CSM interior plate
Optional two tone leather interior
Shelby signature embroidered headrests, floor mats and other Shelby designed components...

...And all (in 750bhp form) for $30,245 (£19.5k) over the standard GT500. Not bad value, really. Looks like it's going to be quite a beast, this Super Snake. Just don't mention the letters I, R, or S...

Good value for the grunt but it just doesn't have the looks, presence or the cachet of a '67 car. I'd give my left gonad for one of those even though I'm sure it would be useless in England, they are just achingly desirable. This modern one looks like yet another car left hooker imported by Kevin and his dad in Essex. No offence if you're called Kevin and / or live in Essex (or have a son who does / is)... Anyway, you get what I mean - a bit Saxondale-ish

I remember reading a Setright article years ago where he talked about the AC Cobra. His opinion was that it was simply scary and that an Austin 1100 would leave it for dead on a windy road.

I imagine the same is true here

Good value for the headline numbers but I doubt if it will be such a bargain to bring it into the UK.

When are manufacturers going to realise that its not just about power and start producing lighter more accessable cars?

That's $30k over the regular GT500. So about $79k total I think.

I really really like that. But would need cap and dark shades for anonymity; you just know everyone who sees you driving it would be giggling and thinking that you're obviously trying to compensate for a lack of power in other areas...

Which is still cheap for 750hp. Although, I'm sure you could achieve a very similar result for far less money.

I would guess landed and legal in the UK it will cost about £60k. I wonder if it feels like a £60k car when you're sat in the drivers seat?
