OPC replacing PCCBs for steel - anyone had this done?
Discussion
After ringing around yesterday for quotes to put steels on my GT2 the OPC came in with the best quote!
I'm not really interested in Alcons etc as my track driving style isn't aggressive enough to need motorsport brakes.
Has anyone else had this done at an OPC? I'm just wondering which discs they'll use due to the size of the PCCBs and the fact that steels were never offered on the GT2.

I know of a GT3 that had this done - it was being sold by an OPC and the technician dropped a PCCB disc and chipped it. Instead of replacing the pair of discs (circa £10k) they swapped for steel, but in doing so also had to replace all the calipers to the correct (red) ones.
Do check that the PCCB (yellow) calipers will be OK with whatever discs & pads they are fitting (I know you can get aftermarket steel discs that fit the yellow calipers but not sure about genuine).

Call Fearnsport about it as they`ve done many and know the score

Purely out of interest - how much would an OPC charge to supply and fit *1* ceramic disc? Do they have to be bought and fitted in pairs?
They wanted £12,000 to do all 4 discs, don't think that included pads. Whilst the PCCBs are good, they're not £10,000 better than steels.B16 FYS said:

I spoke to JZM yesterday and they offered Alcon replacements for around £3600. Not sure I can take the time to get to FS as I need the car ready for Spa in 2 weeks and I'm pretty busy until then. The OPC is 15 mins away.

The later generation discs should last for a huge mileage, so to replace 'one' seems odd. If it has been damaged, then it should be an insurance claim.996GT2 said:

Sounds like they've come down in price a bit or GT2's are cheaper (seems unlikely) than GT3's, which used to be circa £3000+VAT each for GT3 MKII discs (provided the old disc was undamaged and hence exhangeable), plus £350+VAT for pads, plus fitting. Those prices are from late 2005.Another thought is to try Mark at Ninemeister - for the last couple of years they've been testing replacement ceramic discs which cost a LOT less than the Porsche ones. 01925 242342.

Same as Gen 1 997 GT3 discs, available for about £250 a pop, Ceramics are £2900 a pop!! Not available xchange anymore, new only
That'll be it then. They're doing all 4 discs and pads fitted for under 2k.Edited by 911perv on Thursday 16th September 11:38
My ceramics are still usable, wondering whether or not to try and sell them (rears are very good), keep them until I sell the car or make them into some kind of artwork to put in the garage

I'm not sure about putting them in a box for when you sell the car.
I think that given the issues with the Mk1 Ceramics, I'd personally pay more for a car that had already had the steel conversion as the MK1 Ceramics look like a cost waiting to happen.
If the car had been upgraded to Mk2 Ceramics it would be an entirely different story, but that would have to be a warranty job or similar as I can't see any owner spending £12k on brakes.
A pity as the modern ceramics are by all reports very good, but the GT2's stock brakes were from an earlier generation.

Put Performance friction GT3 discs on front (yellow calipers will work fine, they are exactly the same!)
Then 996 GT3 steel discs rear, using GT3 pads also.
Parts would be approx £ 1300 I would think, with about 3.5 hours labour.
Only trouble is you need to run PF pads to fit the discs, but the compound is pretty good now, less dust than before.
It will give you pretty much the stopping power, although not the fade resistance if on track.
