Can it be done without taking the engine out?

I don't know tbh - but I would suspect that you can. It's easy enough to find out though. Remove the AC pulley (4 bolts) then remove the one large crank bolt which holds the part which the pulley is bolted to and see if you have room to withdraw it.

I'm sure I've read it isn't possible with if you have A/C.

According to Dom at TVR Power, it is physically possible even with air con but not at all easy and strongly not advisable.

If you don't get the new seal in perfectly straight you will have a major leak. He strongly recommends taking the engine out to do this properly.
