The car is a 2004 model with the 140hp engine and 6 speed gearbox. The colour is Luxor Black (solid) which is unusual as most black 156's I've seen are metallic black. The multispokes were an extra as was the momo black leather interior.
Overall condition is very good, there are no parking dings, however the bonnet needs a bit of work as there are some scratches and stone chips that need dealing with.
On run a I'm getting 44mpg which I'm very pleased with. Because the car is a veloce it has the sports suspension, it rides well and corners flat. I'm impressed with the engine which is lovely and quiet on a run, bit taxi-ish at idle though and surprisingly revvy for a diesel.

I'm looking at a facelift 54 plate with the 150bhp engine ideally with less than 100,000 miles on the clock for about £4000. Probably wishful thinking by the sounds of it.
Have you looked into a remap and maybe an LSD?

Don't be hung up on find a 150hp model, I have driven both and there isn't a great difference. I will look at a remap and Q2 next year, plan to have the car for quite some time so won't mind spending a few bob on it.
I'm sure you'll get a saloon for £4k, not many SW's for sale at that kind of money.

No, I'm saying there's not a lot of difference between the 140 and 150hp models. The 115 is an 8v, it's a fine engine, however the 140hp is superior in terms of performance, refinement and has the 6 speed box which the 8v doesn't. Tonberry said:

Late model 156 diesels, and especially Sportwagons, are very sought after cars, so you won't be finding any bargains out there.

It's not that they're expensive cars to run, just that many owners bought into the image / lifestyle accessory thing with them, rather than buying them knowing about their maintenance requirements.

I should have expanded my point by saying that I do own one and did go in with eyes open etc, but I still maintain the point that bargains are out there, and yes, whilst some of them are dogs, some of them are genuine, just like any other car in the market place, but I think we're in agreement anyway.
Much like buying an S1 Elise (I am led to believe), it'll end up costing you 10k ish once you've got it to where you want it.

Love the alfa i really wanted one in black but like you said very hard to come by a 156SW JTD so couldnt be too fussy about the colour, mine is quite a rare pearlcent silver, thinking about selling my 156 SW 2.4JTD (150bhp) to fund a 159 JTD if anyone is intrested?

We have a Sportwagon - TSpark Selespeed, though. In black, with tan Momo leather.
Absolutely stunning car, even though we had to have the Selespeed replaced under warranty last year.
(It's a 56 registered, but 02 built car.... so the best of both worlds, like yours - original body with facelift interior)

I have one of each. A 2.0TS Saloon and the JTD Wagon, love 156's and very happy with the two that I own. I really like the facelift, very agresive front end.
