Finally getting our old cottage something like we want it to be, but bloody hell the kitchens dark.
Can anyone suggest an aftermarket downlighter to fit under the kitchen cabinets to illuminate the worktops?
Kitchen was hand made 4 years ago- before we moved in, so needs to be done with as little disruption as possible.
I'm all ears, over to you

Depends how much you want to spend.

Capsule lamps will probably be the most discrete.

What about the wiring?

ELV may be better than mains, depending upon space/layout.

That's another problem- 150 year old place and the sockets are all over the shop!!
May end up removing a few wall tiles to fit a socket near the cooker switch?

Bloody pain in the arse, it really is.

do you have pelmets under the cupboards?

if so you can fit strip lighting like this under the front edge to give a wash down the splashback

That's the stuff!!!
Pelmet is very narrow- about 50mm.
Whoever made the kitchen wants fking- it's all over the place, and not much room between the worktops and eye level cupboards. You can't even stand a bottle of wine there.

have you looked on top of the cupboard just to see if there's a feed for them? you might be able to run a cable inside at the back, saves you having to disturb the tiles

You can get them quite cheaply at B&Q - I paid about £30 for a set of 4 strips with transformer.

As said b&q or any decent electrical wholesaler will have them

better than flourescent strips as they're smaller and don't blow smile

Cheap/simple/tidy option would be to go battery LED.

(and having just clicked who the OP is, SAFEST OPTION too.)

Triphospher slimline florescent fittings are best for pelmit lights. Halogens overheat, don't last long, fiddly to change. LED's tend to be very expensive or pretty carp. (cold, weak light)

Hope I'm not too late for this!

Battery powered strip won't be powerful enough and LED that B&Q sell is expensive, cheaply made and crap. If you want first class LED then I am your man.

www.ecoledlight.co.uk and you will find Flexi-Strip here.

If you don't have a pelmet to hide it behind then I have some stunning aluminium channelling available which you can recess or surfance mount with a snap on opaque cover to hide the LEDs.

Sorry Ben, this simply isn't true. I run my entire house on LED from top to bottom including all general lighting and you would never know. The key is finding a company which actually knows what it's doing and has the right kit for the job. The problem with the Internet is that any dick can start importing badly made crap from China and set themselves up with an online shop which makes it like the wild-west for consumers trying to find the right product.

erm, yes?

As the original post states- hand built kitchen, already in place, no underlighters?
