I drove my mums car today......and liked it!

Normally spend an inordinate amount of my disposable on cars, always looking for the next move, but today I drove Mums Volvo S70 petrol auto estate and loved it. Admittedly it was on the motorway but it proved rapid, comfy, economical. Decent stereo and you can pick them up for 3 grand, I am seriously questioningthe massive depreciators and millstones in my garage. Maybe I will think differently in the morning. Anybody else feel like this?

I think a lot of people go from:

"My word, this is a lot of money to be tied up in something i don't get to use very often and probably isn't as exciting as I thought it would be, so why don't I just get a good value car and have another holiday every year"

to:

"My god I didn't realise how quickly i'd get bored of this, and actually I miss driving home from work in something which is capable of putting a smile on my face, i'm sure I could stretch to a nicer car".

and back again, over and over again!

I'll second that. Which is why i'm contemplating selling mine and buying a diesel estate for daily use, and a weekend car for excitement. Best of both worlds. I think.

I think I spend too much time worrying about what others think of me, how they judge me in a car. I remember when I had an Austin maestro, it was 11 years old when I got it and so bad it was good. Whereas cars costing 10k plus are too nice to bash around but not enough to really get me emotionally involved. It made me think i was being too shallow.

Lol. I have gone through this cycle as well. From the two car approach to the one car does all to the, f*** it, let's just get a really expensive car. I'm sure I'll be at a different stage of the cycle again at some point next year.

Used by mother's 1.0 Vauxhall Nova over one winter a few years ago when I only had motorbikes.

Apart from the crap seat giving me a bad back I loved it. Could drive it flat our everywhere. Momentum became everything so it became an exercise in not braking wherever possible.

Can't say I'd have wanted one permanently though ;-)

Hehe, i've not flip-flopped between cars much but I did have a loaner base model 1.2 Clio while I waited a few months for my Renaultsport to arrive. I loved the economy; I could get 55mpg out of it if i tried.. and believe me I did try, it was so dull to drive about the only 'fun' was trying to get a bigger number on the onboard computer MPG display.

Properly dangerous understeer if you pushed it!

I ran a 1.2 Clio when I had an R32 GTR. It was cheaper to buy and run the clio for work than the GTR which was hardly warmed up by the time I got there.
I didn't find it too dull to drive tbh, my fun was had by trying to drive it as fast as possible but keeping the MPG as high as possible. It was all about conserving momentum!
