just wonderd since i moved to the south coast. most days when i am going home from work, around 2ish, i often see 2/3 small jet aircraft either going to or from bournemouth airport, anyone know what they are used for, or who uses them.

Think they may be "vintage" stuff from the aircraft museum at the airport. I've seen a Vampire around and possibly others.

They are the blue, RAF medium jet training aircraft. You often see them flying formations along the coast or flying out to the channel for Naval Exercises (Thursday Wars). They also double up as private transport for the Top Brass when they are in town.

Yeah I think they are Navy they fly in pairs very close to one another. QinetiQ are just the other side of the Airport so I wouldn't be too surprised if there's some involvement, don't know what they do but yep they have been flying round in close formation for years

They're Falcon 50s (and sometimes are accompanied by their 'missiles' which are normally Hunters or Hawks) that are operated by FRA who are a military contractor who are working with the Navy.

It's fair to say they probably have the best job in the world!

Lots of MOD based stuff around here. Does anyone know if the old WW2 planes still sit in the surrounding forests? Apperently there are a few old spitfires covered up out there?

Have you had a chance to drive along Matchams yet?

Damn, you're right! My mistake!

I didn't realise they were using those as the missiles these days.
I know FRA used to run a Hunter in that role, from what I'd heard they were far cheaper to run than the Hawks they used to have.

Hi Luke, no worries: I guess the only real difference between them - a double engine failure on a 50, & you're landing earlier than planned; on a 20, you're landing right now eek !

Why not, it they all have engines after all!
I spent 2500 hours roaring around the countryside carrying our aerial surveys in helicopters. We used to do some interesting SVFR stuff across some reasonably busy controlled airspace.
