I've Googled and it tells me "pump switch is jammed".

Common answer seems to be clean out.

Took the pipe off the back and subsequently half flooded the kitchen...

Can the pump be blocked if the water still came out the back?

Yup! Debris can foul the impeller, thus stopping the pump but, water can get by the impeller.

Yes! Recently had a problem with my folks machine.

It wasnt pumping water out. The pump was at the front, but full of water. We had to take it apart to drain the water. We then removed the pump, assuming it was done.

Turns out a nail (like thing) had managed to pierce a propeller and was then digging into the side of the housing.

Nail out, back together and works great.

My point is, the system was full of water and it went everywhere, but the pump was at fault.
