New engine fitted last week (well secondhand)

All been running ok last few days, all be it slightly hesitant at low revs, went out tonight to pick up the other half from the station and it ran terrible huge misfire and more pops and bangs than a fire in a firework factory. It cleared at higher revs but was emberassing at any other speed.

Strong petrol smell coming from the exhaust so I am hoping it's a loose lead, will have a look tomorrow.

Could be the O2 sensor? I've had a couple fail and it did similar things (above 3 or 4000 RPM they are 'ignored' by the ECU I think). However, you normaly get the MiL light coming on if they've failed.

Good luck!

MIL has not come on at all, I really am hoping it's just a lead, off to investigate this morning.

A coil pack would give the same symptoms as well.

Also check the O2 sensor wires are not crossed - it takes a few trips for the ECU to learn the wrong adaptives (misfire gets worse and worse). There are two white plugs at the back of the engine, you can see them from the top if you remove the panel, around the top of the bellhousing area. They are marked as odd and even, follow the wires and make sure they go to the correct sides of the exhaust.

Looks like I have found it, the manifold is leaking where it bolts to the block. Will get some sealant on it this afternoon and see how we go.

The lambda sensors are connected the right way so not that unless of course one is failing.

Found it, it was a broken HT lead (new leads aswell rolleyes), this was after I changed the coil packs and left most of my knuckles in the engine bay.

It's good to be back, just needs connecting to the laptop to set everything up again.

Thanks for the help evryone.

Well done, old man thumbup

{ Who put the engine and leads in - coz I'd really like to use them in the future ? )
