Best route to NE from London

Got far more time than normal tomorrow for trip to NE England (let's say Newcastle).

What you chaps recommend? I've probably been by any route that would come to mind, so if anyone has anything more quirky, please do suggest

m1 then m18 then a1(m)

Do Dartford to Newcastle for work a lot.

M25,M11, A1 straight line, roads Ok few cameras

M1, M18 then A1 is the best and quickest route. The A1 is littered with cameras, although there are a few average speed cameras on the M1 now.

If your looking for a more interesting drive then i'm affraid there isnt realy an option, unless you want to take a detour of about an hour or so

A1 is much more interesting than M1 over that journey, IMO. Yes there are some cameras but the M1 is so boring comparatively. No scenery, no elevation or sense of progression, just miles and miles and miles of lumpy tarmac and MLMs.

I do this journey fairly regularly (I live near Dishforth, the GF lives near Potters Bar) and agree with Graebob - the M1 is hellishly boring! There are a good few miles of average speed cameras too which is never a good thing.

However the A1 has a lot more scenery, but a few speed cameras along the way and can be just as clogged up with lorries/general traffic as the M1 gets.

In other words, flip a coin! That's what I've started doing*


*unless I'm being tight, as I get a few more mpg going the M1 so have recently gone that way the last few times
