Essentially n/a tuning is expensive and doesn't offer a very good return.

I don't know the engine you're referring to, but would imagine you could free up a few BHP with a filter/exhaust, next stage a hot cam and a remap (possibly at the expense of driveability and low down torque), after that you are looking at head work.

You have to ask if it's worth the cost for the small return though.

Investigating superchargers might be a plan - although likely to be expensive unless somebody has done the groundwork using a MINI s/c or something.

nope its still a 2.0 n/a. but with better wheels, interior, suspension, bodykit, gearbox, engine, etc.

but to try and get much out of the 130bhp zetec will cost a lot of money (remap £400, cams £500, exhaust £300, air filter £100 which will probably only take you up to maybe 150bhp and cause undue stress on the engine, then probably suspension, brakes etc) whereas an st170 can be had for about £3k and is 170bhp out of the box.

Ok i see where you are coming from however i have heard a lot about the regular faults that the st170 has for example

lamba sensor
inlet magnifold (which causes engine management light to light up)
and after about 80,000 mls ish the clutch will need replacing and possibly the flywheel and iv heard that is £800+

Have you ever known or heard of these problems with the st170

thanks for your advice mate

Although you'll want the packs (Recaros and Xenons, etc) which will take the price up... wink

Nope! Have you tried the Ford Focus Owners Club?

I think in general they are a reliable car but not particularly amazing, I have a 1.8 and it feels like it could do with more grunt. I'd save for an RS if you really want to go that route smile

Yes that was my option however i have recently been looking at focus st225

I looked at your profile and believe you owned one

was it reliable and did you have any problems i was looking at the st owners club a few weeks ago and they had a forum where everone had listed there faults or problems

And a regular came up i think it was called driveshaft chatter or something carnt quite remember

did you ever suffer from this

i apologise if you think im being cheeky

i had a focus st 2.5t, and other than a noise from a shock absorber which was fixed under warranty i never had a problem in the 2 and a half years i owned it. great car.

i think you will find if you want to mod your 2.0zetec to anywhere near st170 power you will end up with a fair few more problems arising than a standard st170 would be likely to give you.

Exactly. Start modding cars and get ready for problems.

I used to have a 2.0 ESP many year ago - rolling roaded at 143bhp standard. They seem to make different power out of the box, some other cars there on that day made stated (or slightly less) power.

As said above, leave it until you can afford something quicker.

I would agree with the comments before. I have a Fiesta ST and modded it to over 200bhp but this = ££££££, now Ive learnt my lesson and just saved until i could buy a proper performance car its worth the wait. But if you do want a bit more performance I would go down the air filter remap and lightweight alloy road. Sod it get a loan and get a RS !!!!

I had one of those a while back. Did quite a bit to it as well. This was back in early 2002 when the ST170 was just released and the RS wasn't out yet so buying a 2 year old ESP and tuning it made sence over the ST. Ford racing throttle bodies and a decent exhaust system made it sound amazing but it really would have been more cost effective to get a supercharger for it.
£3K for the convwersion if I remember correctly. Much easier way to get 200bhp than the god awful ammount I spent.
