Can your milk beat this?

Had a cup of tea earlier. I realised from the slight sludge in the bottom of the cup that the milk was a bit dodgy, but it tasted OK. It was fine for tea & cereal yesterday.

Just checked the use-by date on the 4-pint bottle: 28th AUGUST!

Can your milk beat this for survival?

Funny stuff, milk. I have had containers of milk that have genuinely been absolutely fine 2 weeks past the best before date. Other times it's was going funny before.

Bread is worse though. I'm sick of picking bits of mould off it 2 days after I bought it

Not sure on the dates exactly, but while at uni I was amazed that milk used to regularly last about 2 weeks beyond its use by date. You knew when it was time to chuck it out when the cup of tea had solid bits floating in the top.

Take it out of the plastic bag and put it in a paper bag. Keeps a lot longer.

Not milk, but we were having the "use by dates" discussion over Sunday dinner a couple of weeks ago and my Grandma announced that she's still using food that they had in when my Grandpa was alive. He died nearly 4 years ago!

Saying that though, she does have that much food in the cellar that she would probably survive another world war without having to go to the shop. I mean really, who needs two chest freezers full of snap?

It's skimmed milk which seems to last much longer than milk containing cream, but nearly three weeks past its use-by date is a record for us, especially for bog-standard supermarket-bought milk.

That stuff will stay fresh until 3 weeks after the end of time.

Idly reading the lid foil on my muller fruit corner whilst I was eating it, Wednesday, the best before date was the 9 th - didn't even taste mildly off.

Cast iron stomach lining helps too I guess.

TBH I never check the dates on milk... If it curdles in tea or coffee, it's time to chuck it
