AVI Editing

I've got some in car avi footage that I took on a recent trip to the Alps and need to edit it - I only need to add a title at the beginning and then cut between a few scenes. I downloaded avitricks which looked ideal but I can't get the sound to work. The files have sound when I play them in vlc but not in avitricks.

Does anyone know where I might be going wrong or perhaps could recommend a free, easy to use editor?

If you are on a PC you will have Windoze Movie Maker.
