Starter Bike Wanted

Will be looking to buy my first proper road bike in a few weeks time. Would prefer second hand as can probably get a better spec one.

Budget around £200, ideally something reasonably upgradeable. Think about a 55inch would be about right.

Anyone got anything?

If your budget is £200, buy a £200 bike but don't spend money upgrading it because it will still be a POS. Can you not save up a bit more from the outset?

And test ride everything you can.

Read this thread after a few posts around repairing an old clunker he ended up buying a £450 starter, about as cheap as road bikes get, it has some pretty basic spec but ideal as a starter.

Well could probably budget a bit more, but going back to uni for a year so funds are pretty tight, and going to be doing a 15 mile day commute to uni so could do with something that will keep up with my housemate a bit better than a full suspension mountain bike!

I wouldn't mind getting a cheapo to begin with then building another up over time.

Keep your eyes peeled on a well known (and universally hated) auction site. I managed to pick up a Trek 1500 (about 2005 vintage) with full Ultegra kit for £300 notes (after I sold the Tri-bars it came with for £70 notes, so actual bike was £370 but still not bad). I had to bid on quite a few before I managed to pick that one up - roughly 10-12 I'd say.
