Cheaper to insure a modified car
Discussion
Can anyone explain this..
I've currently got a Mk1 Ford Focus RS which is running around 300bhp. Have 6 points.. and 6 years NCD on two policies as always have run 2 cars. Insurance costs £580 with all modifications + points declared.
I have just bought a poverty spec 2005 Mondeo LX TDCI to use as a daily hack, and have tried most of the mainstream insurers as well gocompare.com and Adrian Flux. The best quite I can get is just over £600.. most come in at about £900..
Anyone know the logic behind this? Greenlight Insurance insure the RS but they won't insure the Mondeo as its not a performance car..

Thats because Mondeos are company cars generally, so involved in more accidents.
your RS focus will generally be owned by people who look after their cars and don't rear end other cars on motorways in rush hour, every day...
not that im saying mondeo drivers are bad drivers or anything....

Did you receive your points in the last year? If so, they won't normally take this into consideration until you come to renew your RS's policy and then adjust the premium accordingly, but will be considered on a new policy.
It's all based on statistics that are modified and updated pretty regularly. It depends what has happened in the last 'x' months within the automotive population and explains why the same car with all other criteria kept consistent (e.g. address) will result in differing premiums throughout the year.
Also, this time of year is not the best in terms of competitive rates. March (i.e. before the end of the financial year) is generally much better.

All points were received before I re-insured the RS... So all points were declared when getting quoted.. the last set of points were gained in May 09.. and the RS is up for renewal soon as well.. wonder how thats going to work out..It's all based on statistics that are modified and updated pretty regularly. I noticed my insurance has increased this year (renewed at end of August), perhaps getting a quote on the RS may put things into perspective....Gassing Station | General Gassing [Archive] | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff

It must be because people with similar details to you don't claim on Focus RS's and do claim on Mondeo's...
