Stupid Question no.3421 - How does my Knob come off ???

Hi all,

Wanting to remove the box from my Griffith 500. Its a T5 box with a nice shiny ball ended gear lever. I know that the gear shaft unbolts from the gearbox stub, but does the knob unscrew from the shaft, or does the whole shaft and knob come off as one piece?

I have a half cage in the rear of the car so cant get the transmission tunnel cover off - the side extensions/wings/whatever they are called that trim the rear parcel shelf area will not go past the cage uprights. What I was hoping to do was to remove the gearknob and drop the box out without having to dismantle the roll cage to get the trim off etc etc

You should try screwing your knob off.

if it's the same as mine (which keeps coming loose) then ball part is screwed on and then held in position by the collar under it, which acts as a lock nut...at first glance ball and collar look to be all one piece.

The two pieces just lock against each other,a firm grip of the ball and turn anti clockwise SHOULD release one from the other ......

I had a good grip of my knob earlier today but couldnt work it loose

I did wonder if the collar and knob were one piece so thanks for clearing that up.

I shall have to use more brute force and ignorance and then maybe I can get it to come off in my hand .......Oh God thats just wrong.


Wheres that bloody advert come from????
