I've got this engine in the garage - it's a Holbay with twin down-draught Webers.

It's been bored and fully re-built with allsorts of little extra's. This was done for a specific car which was then sold, and the engine has lay dormant since - not fitted into anything since it was re-built. Also still got the original gearbox it was mated to.

Is it wondering if it's worth anything - if it isn't then I might just save it and find a Mk2 Escort shell to stick it in (always wanted to do that).

Pic of the engine was taken before the re-build:

ETA - oopss should have been in GG.

Hillman Imp would be a good home for it!

It was in an early Lotus Seven Series I which had been bastardised by the previous owner - now fully restored thankfully!

Rob, I'd say it's worth quite a bit but there are a few questions.

If it was in an early 7 then thats the place to start, there must be people with early 7s that would pay good money for it if it an original engine.

If it has stood unused for any lenght of time it will need a re-fresh/rebuild.

The invoice you posted is a bit...err.. odd..... it's dated 1992 was that when the engine was built/rebuilt?
The invioce has a lot of X/F references - that is a common term used for Ford crossflow engines, which yours is not.

Thanks Steve - I think the problem stems from the fact that the early 7's should have had at the very least a BMC engine and to be completely original - a Coventry Climax. This one had been shoe-horned in at some point, and was then removed and re-built prior to the restoration. Good point on the invoice, that's all that was found with it so maybe something had been mixed up along the way.

Rob, don't know if you've already had a look here but thought I'd mention it anyway.
Also try here.

The other thing that comes to mind re the x/f parts used - they may have been used in a pre-x/f engine, sorry I don't know enough to be of any more help.
Let us know how you get on.

Right, after spending some time working abroad, (coupled with various other issues), I've now decided to clear out the garage with the intent of rebuilding 1 (possibly 2 if 'er indoors doesn't find out) race cars, so this needs to go in order to clear some space for a new arrival.

What are the opinions on this? Best to have it re-built? Sell it "as is"? I don't mind chucking a few quid at it if it's likely I'll see it back - but don't want it hanging round indefinitely on the off chance that someone 'might want it.

The Escort shell idea is out of the window now given the mad sums these things are going for!

Is this for a Talbot sunbeam or Avenger ti?

EBay or motorsport news add should find a strong buyer for historic rally or circuit group 1.

Unsure what it was originally fitted to, but we inherited it in a Lotus 7 of my old man's.

Literally no idea what kind of money this is worth, having seen some engines go for next to nothing, and others (such as specc'd) race engines fetch close to 5k. To me this seems to be a middle ground and has obviously had a few quid spent on it previously so I'm really struggling to think of a guide price.

Would you have it rebuilt, or is that a false economy and I should just sell as is and let the new owner take care of that?

Advertise it in The Motoring News.
It'll go.

Any ideas on a guide price to start it at? Or just advertise for offers?

Not worth bothering to get it stripped etc and running?
