Vasectomy

The wife and I have decided that with our 3nd child on the way, that is enough.#

With that in mind, I have decided I want the snip.

What are peoples experiences of this and are there any negatives to having this done?

Not in my experience. It's a snip and stitch.

What should I be expecting to pay for the surgery?

It's free on the NHS. About £600 private, day surgery. The "interesting" bit is that the reversal is harder and not guaranteed plus costs about £2000 so make sure you're 100% certain you won't want kids with her (or indeed anyone else should the relationship go south - apologies for sounding negative but it can become a real issue for some). As to the pricing, I can't see why the vas deferens ( ) but it may be due to the fact that you have to stay in overnight.

Oh, it will feel like you've been whacked in the nuts with a baseball bat for about 5 days.

As an aside, I've realised why it's called a vasectomy. Vas and Ectomy. Whoop!

Got the prices wrong initially. Looks like both ops would be day surgery. Still no idea why it's more expensive. Longer to do maybe.

I had a little hernia done at the same which was more painful than the snip which hardly hurt at all. Now it's keyhole surgery it heals up really quickly and you should be back to work in a few days.
One of my friends had it done on a Friday afternoon and was back at work Monday.
Shave your meat & two veg before you go, saves you doing it there.

I'm not sure its all keyhole these days, a colleague had it done last month and it was a case of cut open the coin purse, manhandle each of your boys out snip the VD and replace.

It was for me, two cuts about 1cm, 2 stitches and done.

My hubby didn't even get a stitch! Just a plaster and was back at work the next day.............he did rather enjoy the Valium he was given though

unless things have changed drastically since 1988, or you're going for a general, it was the squeezing of each kn&cker then sticking a bloody great needle in each that did it for me. Only time I've ever felt like I was going to pass out

I had it done.....paid the £800 to be knocked out went to work next day had more pain the day after aside from that surgically OK.. but just wish I hadnt had it done no real reason just dont feel the same TBH affects every one differently I guess.

Has the snip and a Circ done at the same time (Health reasons before you ask) and I was in pain for a couple of days with the nuts, but this could have been masked by the Circ.

I had it done some time ago. Slight discomfort during the Op - I was sedated but not unconscious - but no ill-effects afterwards. Back home the same day. Don't plan on cycling home afterwards(!) but I had no probs at all and it wasn't painful.

The worst bit was the 'proving sample' some time later, but only because of location and circumstance, but that's a different story.

Had it done on the NHS at the beginning of July. One incision, about 7mm long, and that was all. Relatively painless, bit of a sting with the anasthetic. Felt a bit achey for a couple of days, and for a while after sometimes it felt a bit like i'd been kicked in the balls...although not as bad, sort of if i'd been kicked an hour ago and was recovering if you get what I mean.

Make sure you rest like they tell you to. My wife was brilliant with making me rest, and keeping the kids from climbing on me.

I had 2 days off work, and then walked to/from work for a week after, then back on my bike after that and all has been excellent.

I've been told to wait 16 weeks before giving the first sample, and then another 2 weeks after that for sample 2. Then, hopefully it'll be the all clear.

Edited to add...Was fully awake throughout, I was only in the hospital for about 1 1/2 hours in total, and no stitches, just a bit of spray on glue stuff and some gauze.

Doesn't feel the same in what sense? I suppose it's possible they cut through a nerve. The benefits outweigh the side-effects presumably - I mean you can't get your wife pregnant if you've already had a few kids.
