What do we think of the A4?

Audis are not very popular with PHers as Clarkson declared they are all driven by cocks (so it must be true 
) ... but IMO its a fine car and the 2.0T is a decent engine offering a good combination of usable performance and low running costs. Not sure on specific issues to look out for though.

They have reasonable PQ and lots of people seem to like the way they look, however if you're interested in driving fast I'd say look elsewhere. They are too nose heavy and the dampers can't cope with sustained high speed driving on bumpy roads.
If you want a nice A4 sized saloon from Germany, get a Passat.

The current Passat is based on a stretched Golf platform though, no 2.0T option, no 4WD... hardly comparable at all. The SEAT Exeo would be its closest relation as thats based on the B7 A4, but its still pricey.

I bought a VAG product once and it was a pile of s
te so can speak with some experience. I also know a load of mates that own VAG products and thiers are piles of ste too. Unreliable, poor design and outrageously expensive aftersales. Actually the design bit was a bit harsh. I do rather like the fact that VAG cars have a footrest for your right foot 
Sorry for slagging stuff off but as and engineer I can smell a crap product a mile off. I just don't understand why most folks can't see through the marketing BS either.
I had an S-line Avant with the 2.0 TFSi, bought new in 2007 and sold this year only because we found it too cramped (and low) with 2 children. It was bought as my first family car after a string of hot hatches, and cushioned the blow quite nicely.
S-line is fairly hard riding but since my preceding car was a Civic Type-R I found it acceptable. The handling isn't exactly fun but it was safe enough, and could be hustled along when needed. The engine was really impressive and suited the car well. I tried the same engine in a Golf GTi and it didn't click for me; I ended up buying the Civic. I also tried the A4 with the 140bhp TDi engine and it was like driving a tractor with the whole car rocking when sat idle! It did consume more oil than any other car I've owned (about 1l every 6K miles) but overall a decent package. The interior was rock solid and the plastics stood up well to the abuse of young children and associated luggage.

sure, they're not at the pointy end of dynamics but they're ok to drive, reliable (my father's a4 gets used regularly to and from London to Milan, I've stick over 50k on my a3), cheap to service at an indy and you can do big miles in comfort
I've driven both quattro versions of the a3 and a4, unless you've got the more powerful version don't bother, they're awful
also, drive the s-line and sport versions, there's a big difference in ride between them

I had a B5 A4. Whilst it wasn't the most reliable little git, the quattro did very well in the CNY winters. Was comfy, and although legroom wasn't great in the back, I never had to sit in the back, so who cares! certainly a nice place to sit, for the range it sits in, so personally I have no issues with it. As for the cock moniker, well, who really gives a crap?

The Passat is a much more practical car, and probably, on balance, drives equally as well - don't forget that the A4 was an ageing design in 2005, but the Passat was brand new.
Petrol turbo Passats are pretty cheap - but not all that common - however, a nice TFSI in Sport trim should be easily attainable for the budget.
