Considering our honeymoon there. What's the general consensus?

Just returned from there yesterday - camping though, not honeymooning. It's Southern Italy therefore it's:
  • Exciting
  • Manic ( Italians are crazy and don't live like we do).
  • Still warm, so that's good
  • Relatively cheap - certainly less expensive than UK
  • Really targeted at older people, the place is full of older English/German/US tourists (at least it was last two weeks). That's not to say that it's not a nice place to go, just be ready for it.
  • there's lots to see locally - we got the train to Naples which is quite an experience, and you can catch a bus along the Amalfi coast, or drive yourself if you're motoring. I drove, and actually would recommend the bus! You'll see more.
Have fun, food is good, coffee is good, people are generally friendly and helpfulc - and it's not UK.

We went to Amalfi for holiday last year with a day trip to Sorrento, I would recommend Ravello as well just for the view
From our hotel window..

Sorrento is great, as has been mentioned, beach by day, dress up & party in the evening. Watch out for the scooters!

Capri stunning though expensive.

Pompei is a must, very moving.

Naples a sthole.

Just have to love the itallians though, great coffee, great vibe, the way of life.

We went to Sorrento for my wife's birthday and loved it (some 4 years ago mind). We stayed half board at the Hotel Bristol http://www.bristolsorrento.com/ and I had some of the best food anywhere in the world (there was even a vegi option which is amazing).

Capri is stunning, although we would have liked to stayed a couple of nights here as it is a great place to explore (there are plenty of boats to and from Sorrento).

Naples is not a nice place, avoid if you can (apart from using the airport).

Try and stay overnight on Capri rather than just going for the day. It is sooooo much nicer once all the day trippers have left!

Fantastic restaurant there too - Il Geranio

I go every year as my dad owns a house on the Amalfi coast and we all love it.

Capri is a must but violently expensive. It is worth the walk up to the Villa. Naples is not what a lot of people think, it is awful, move along. Pompeii is awesome, much bigger than most people think. Herculaenum is fantastic too. Further South is Paestum which is like pompeii but much smaller. Possibly not as good but there will only be about half a dozen people there.

If you want to get away from too much tourism than head further south down near Agropoli. That is where the Italians go and it is relatively unspoilt. I rarely meet/see any other nationality other than Italians. Who are bonkers, lovely but completely bonkers.
It is less 'touristy' but has less to do. Depends on what you want to do really

As for transport, try the Metro Mare, the sea ferries. Relatively cheap, go everywhere and we love watching them. No idea why but in the evenings we often wander down to a port, sit there with our coffees and ice creams and watch the ferries come and go. It is weirdly fascinating.

Beautiful, romantic and lovely destination. And you sometimes see some italian exotica..... (not as much as you would in the North, but enough!)

Spot on, on all fronts.

Also must emphasise the earlier post about it being full of older people. The sea of white hair at most attractions is not for the faint-hearted! But you can seek out nicer spots with younger people and have some more fun.

Not sure that it is that much cheaper than the UK. I know we got a good deal on a nice hotel when we were there 5 years ago, but eating out / drinks / getting around was pretty comparable with the UK.

Thanks again for the great information. I will refer to this before booking accommodation as we onl have flights booked at this stage. They were only £112 each from gatwick with BA.

Let's hope they're not on strike!

Coach transfer from Naples to Sorrento along narrow cliff roads can be an eye opener if the roads are busy & you have an itallian coach driver!

I stayed a week there, would heartily recommend it. Anacapri is much nicer than Capri though (it's on the opposite side of the island), Capri great for pomp and people watching, Anacapri is where people actually live, so it's got much more of a local feel.

Sorrento is great, but Capri is the jewel.

Don't forget all the other nice towns on the coast, Positano, Ravello, etc. which are all stunning.

It's on our list to stop off there by yacht next time we're doing a long trip.
