Input on my next car, opinions?

So yeah, figured i'd post this up.

My car history to date is pretty shoddy.

1994 1.3L Escort (Absoloutley knackered, But i loved it )
1993 1.4 Mk3 Astra (Cheap as chips and lasted well - Looking to sell it as low mileage still)

Ok so basically, being 18 i'm pretty limited to choice, i dont have a years NCB Under my belt, Only been on the road 6 Months or so Had my lisence over a year.

Affordable insurance wise i've come up with two cars so far :

-1997-2001 Ford Focus, Either a 1.4 Or a 1.6. Dont really want a 1.8 As insurance is a fair bit higher.

-Mk3/4 Golf, Again a 1.4 or a 1.6 Prefferd for cheaper insurance.

-Mk4 Astra, 1.6.


What im looking for :
PAS Is a Must, i loathe non power steering after owning the Escort
1.4L Or Above.
1997 Onwards preffered. Something newer i guess.
Dont want a car thats too big like my friends Carina
Wouldn't mind a smaller car like a Saxo, 106 Etc but they're generally higher on insurance and not as safe.


Overall im looking for a nicer third car, (Second technically since i didnt have the scort long!)
Going to save up a bit and spend between £800-1500 On it. Want it to have a slight bit of go and be fun to drive. Compared to an Escort and an Astra Mk3 that cant be hard to achieve

Would also like something im able to fiddle with also, got a keen interest and a bit of knowledge working on cars myself.

Any suggestions welcome, cheers.

Adding :

Peugeot 306, Either a 1.9DTurbo Or possibly a 1.6 Petrol to that list, like the look of em'.

Yeah, it's honestly what im leaning towards at the moment, seem to be able to pick up fairly tidy ones for around a grand and they're nice looking cars.

Also probably the best equipped out of what i've come up with so far. Also fairly decent on insurance.

Another vote for the Focus. I really enjoyed mine, it was the Ghia spec with the 1.8 engine, it wasn't particularly amazing at any one thing but it had comfy seats, nice quiet cabin and decent sharp handling, I also found the looks and the interior more funky and stylish than anything else I could find for a similar price.

I think it's the car I owned for the longest amount of time too.

I think they all come with heated front windscreen too - which is great when it starts to snow.

Yeah i'm keeping an eye out for well priced 1.4/1.6 Ones currently
