X5 50i in Pearl Silver.

Damn, the options are expensive and I always find a way to convince myself I need so many of them. There were very few to choose when I ordered the M5, so this came as a shock.

The reason for moving from M5 to X5 is arrival due in January of child number three, which will leave me with three children under five and their car seats to carry. They won't fit in the M5, current or new.

Almost fortunately, the X5 M is not available with a third row of seats, otherwise I'd have been in danger of buying a car I have described many times on PH as an abomination. Havign driven the X6 M though, I might not have been tempted ot the M version. It is very fast, but doesn't feel remotely like an M car. The 50i is fast enough for an SUV.

After the V10 M5 just about anything makes sense mpg wise!!

BMW need to get their finger out and come up with a decent hybrid version instead of an M-version - they will sell loads more of those than the M-version judging by the number of Lexus RX400's I see (I mean in Europe, not UK).

I read about the X6 hybrid they have launched in the States that is quite good but that is allot more expensive than the normal 5.0, I think 18k more but can't remember in which currency it is though.

So will you let the M5 go or mothball it until the kids grow out of the car seats...

Mileage isn't high enough to make me worry about mpg.

M5 will probably go if I find a buyer at the right price, as I don't really have anywhere to store it. By the time it would be ready to come out of mothballs, I could think about a year old F10 M5.

Depreciation is just one of those things.

At the moment, the Asian markets can't get enough of RHD petrol-engined X5s. That may not last, but if I had one to sell now, it would go straight to Asia.

I found the same when I ordered mine....I got to well over £10k on options without trying too hard. I decided when I ordered mine that it was a keeper as the family car for five years so I got a bit carried away. Reversing camera, panoramic roof, powered boot, third row seats, upgraded sound, Satnav, privacy glass, blinds, soft close doors (you don't want to wake the kids up do you?!?!) etc etc.... Have you ordered the Comfort Seats ? They're brilliant.

I did order comfort seats, but I thought I was being thriftyinnot ordering powered boot and soft close doors. I still came out with an insane five figure options bill. Good thing I managed to negotiate a massive (not) 5% discount.

Very, very close, but £15k less than an X5M with most of the same options.

Now I feel better.

Ouch!

Personally I think i would have had a used Q7 V12 at that money, but I'm relived you did not buy the abomination that is an X6!

Can't stand the Q7. It's another abomination.

THe X6 doesn't have the seats. It has less space than the M5. A car that makes no sense whatsoever.

I drove the X6 M and was distinctly underwhelmed.

Worth mentioning that the car is supposed to arrive in December and will be on winter tyres. No slipping around in the snow for us.

I tried very hard to get my wife to buy the X5 about a year ago.

She's not very car oriented and I tried unsubtely to point her in the direction of an X5 over an XC90 and a nissian Quashqai+2.

I made her have a testdrive in all three and promised I wouldn't chime in during the testdrives with my opinion as long as she gave all three a decent chance. My theory was that the drive would immediately sell the X5 to her.

At the end she chose the Nissan due to its better feel while driving.

I had to walk away after that. Although a year later she still seems quite taken with the nissan so....

I suppose Alpina don't offer anything that would have worked for you.

Will an ordinary BMW disappoint after a long string of M cars?

I'm not letting my wife testdrive any of the others. She likes the fact that the X5's dash and control layout is very similar to that in my M5. That's women for you.

Nothing from Alpina.

An ordinary BMW will not match up to the M cars, but I have something fun in the garage anyway. What would have disappointed would have been an X5 M (if they made it wiht three rows of seats, which they don't), because that would have been a disappointing pretend M car.
