pops and bangs

My 2.5 is popping and banging a bit too much these days, particularly at low speeds. When I come of the gas at around 40mph and let the car slow to 30mph, the fireworks begin. The idle is pretty bad too, even though I've set it to 800rpm. It's ok until the fans cut in, then the engine almost stalls. To many times I've found myself at traffic lights on a hill with a useless handbrake, holding the car on the brake with left foot and nursing the throttle with the right. Not an ideal hill start situation!
Any ideas? Air leak somewhere? If so, how do you find it?

I would suggest a small leak somewhere in the exhaust system, or Lamda sensor

what ecu do you have ?

Probably an air leak exhaust manifolds back, it's caused by unburned fuel mixing with air from the leak and being ignited by the hot exhaust gasses.
My bet would be cracked manifold or one of the first joints along the exhaust system.

My 3 had the same issues and was cured by the magic hands of Yellowshed with his laptop.

It's a little tappetty by rear manifold, perhaps the gasket is shot again(must do 1 every year!)Will try to nip it up & see if there's a difference.
I have the upgraded ecu.

Mine got progressively worse (MBE ECU) with the stalling issues, you can't just adjust the throttle body either to cure it. A slighly leaky exhaust manifold won't give you the stalling probs but may give the pops.

While you're having a poke around in there, check all your vacuum hoses as well.

i hope that solves it as I have mine booked in with yellowshed this thursday to see if i can get it running a bit better with less pops and bangs.
