Brooklands Debacle
Planning race between MG and Mercedes
Mercedes Benz's plans for the rejuvenating the Brooklands racetrack in Surrey have been eclipsed by MG Rover who have bought the Tescos superstore within the same site.
Mercedes have recently been granted planning permission for a multi million pound showroom and museum at the historial Brooklands site. Opposition from motoring enthusiasts has been vocal as many see the German company's presence as an affront to the long history of British motoring and aeronautics at the site.
Now MG Rover are set to steal Benz's thunder with the acquisition of the Brooklands Tesco store. Tesco have sold the outlet to the Phoenix consortium for £1 in return for branding on the new MG Rover feature.
Planning permission has been sought for a 200 foot high tower to be built on the site of the existing store which fronts onto a section of the old banked track. The MG Tesco Tower will play host to a fully restored Wellington Bomber - a tribute to Brookland's part in the Second World War when it operated as a RAF base.
DaimlerChrysler have been in talks with Elmbridge borough council over the move, believing the loss of the supermarket is not in locals' interest and that the move is a cynical publicity exercise by MG and Tesco.
A search of recent planning applications reveals that DaimlerChrysler are seeking to counter MG's stunt with a 300 foot tower on the opposite side of the site, featuring a Heinkel He-162 Salamander Volks Jager.
