Professionally produced CVs - any thoughts?

I've been on the job market for a while now and although I've got 15 years experience in my field I'm just not getting interviews for jobs where I should easily be in the running. My CV is pretty good, or so I thought. One of the problems I thinks is that although I was a director at my last company I am not looking for this level of job (I've had quite enough of the problems of trying to keep a small business afloat for the foreseeable future) and I suspect some recruiters will be seeing director/shareholder on my CV and think I'm not going to stick around.
One option that's occurred to me is to get a professionally produced CV. While it's possible to put together a reasonable CV yourself, someone who knows the recruitment game inside out and does it for a living should, in theory, be able to write one with all the right triggers needed to get in front of someone. As long as it's not a work of fiction I figure it's got to be worth a go.
Any thoughts from recruiters or job applicants who have tried this would be very welcome!

I had my CV written professionally a couple of years ago and I think it certainly made a big difference then, they produced it in the correct format and got the relevant info up top. One criticism is that they tend to use w

a CV tailored to the HR dept of a large multi will not come across at all well to the hiring manager/director at an SME. think of what role you want to do and in what type of company before setting off.
my own CV was improved massively after quite a bit of input from a PHer who is a hiring manager in the kind of industry and company i want to work for. My response rate improved and my CV reads much better as a result.
