Very true. No one is going to insure a convicted drink driver for a small premium. Yes he may have had the ban and may have learnt his lesson, but from the insurer's point of view, there's nothing saying he won't be liable of doing the same thing again.

That said, premiums are high for everyone else, so I'd expect his quotes to be somewhat higher than anyone else driving a fairly 'average' car.

What exactly are you looking to get him insured to drive?

Without hearing the circumstances I can't really comment on the driver personally as some people here have done. Calling somebody a cock for drink driving is proof that your a cock if you don't have any idea the circumstance in which he was caught...

I wouldn't have thought drink driving would put insurance up that much! I don't know the legislation on it but I would expect the NCD to continue as it lasts for 24months without being insured on a car and I can't see a reason why it wouldn't unless he has to retake a test and get a new licence thus re-setting his pass date. In which case, expect the prices to be the same as they would be for any new driver (expensive)

I knew someone that was a bit of cock behind the wheel - got a ban for doing something stupid.

However I'm sure he got round the high premiums by simply going as a named driver on Daddy's policy for a number of years. He didnt change.

Not really.

Can you give an example of circumstances in which you think it is reasonable and acceptable to be convicted of drunk driving?

I just moved house and changed the address on the policy, they added £100 because of a very small difference in risk. So I would expect them to add many hundreds for a drink drive claim.

Nipping outside to get something from the car, jumping in the drivers seat, keys in hand and reaching across to the glovebox for said item as the BiB pull up.....

Although I doubt this is the case.....

Wish my insurance was that cheap....

The guy with a drink-drive conviction will get insurance cover- while the bigger operators will take one look and quote a telephone number to get shut of him, smaller operators will think "ah- big premium" and take a chance. Comparison sites are unlikely to be of any help, they are geared to Mr. Average anyway, and anything out of the ordinary such as modifications or convictions will not bring a quote. Try insurance brokers such as Colonnade/Swinton, and have a look in the small ad pages of magazines like "Fast Car/Max Power" as insurers willing to cover drivers with convictions often advertise in these types of mag. Off the top of my head, I am pretty sure 1stQuote will insure convicted drink drivers. Worth looking at the types of cars learners use - group 1/2 insurance to get the quote down(ford ka? fiat cinquecento?)

Alternatively- does he really need a car? He has managed for 15 months without- can buy a lot of taxis/bus fares with this sort of outlay.

Fair point well made.
Fictitious point, totally irrelevant.
He's been working within bus distance of his home. Sometimes 2 or 3 buses.
This is not an ideal way to travel and it limits where he can work too.

You lot are unbelievable.

I used you last year because I had a criminal conviction for assault. Cost me £1000p.a. with an insurer called 'Highway'.

Come renewal, in April of this year, the premium went up to £1500. When I queried this I was told that you no longer offered the scheme for convicted drivers. After spending hours and hours getting quotes from other companies I finally found someone cheaper.

Now you're saying you still offer a scheme for convicted drivers?
