Hi there
I presume this is a post 2006(56reg) onwards car?
If it is then this is without doubt the tensioner problem that is well documented as a known problem and is fixed by BMW foc most of the time (obv in warranty) -just search YouTube or on here, lots of people have had it.
Get it booked into the dealer when you can, it won't blow up, just sounds awful!

Thanks for your reply. Yup - it's a 56 reg. I did try searching but came up with sweat f a.
What actually is the problem?
Dont quote me, but I believe its to do with the oil supply to the timing chain tensioner - so basically the noise is the timing chain banging about. Happens if its cold and the car has been stood for a day or two. Once there is oil pumping round the system it goes away.
I've not really been active on mini forums for a while so dont know what the status is - but some googling will get you the answers, from what I remember BMW were denying it was a problem for a while - but there do seem to be rare cases of timing chains jumping and causing problems, also the dealer support for the problem was patchy......maybe it's all sorted now. My car has only ever done it once so I never followed it up.
