Heater resistor - Galaxy - what does it do?

My blower on the Galaxy (MK1) has packed up, became very intermittent and slow, then finally died. I have complete resistance over the circuit on the blower. I tested the feed and it shows 12v whatever setting I put the fan on apart from 0 which gives 0v, googling has revealed that it should show lower voltages when I select slower speeds. A new heater blower is on the way to me awaiting swap out.

I have sent the heater resistor off to a chap who repairs them and he reported it was in perfect condition. Can anyone tell me what this heater resistor does, does it control the fan speed and hence fan voltage or is it do to with some other element of the heating system?

If it is the same as a Renault (which it probably is) the resistor itself lets you choose different fan speeds so I guess reduces/ increases voltage to the motor.

It is usually a series of resistors that reduce the voltage to the blower motor depending on the position of the switch (the speed you select).

Position 1 being the highest resistance and 4 the lowest (for example).

Thats what I thought, its funny I had the unit tested and the guy says it was ok and gave me a refund. I suppose when I put the new fan on I will see if the theory applies and goes full blast. I think the resistor in the rear fan is the same, I might swap them to check.
