Typical What Car Thread?

A colleague wants a car that’s going to be reliable, fun, very progressive at low speed and possibly rear drive. They want to experience the ‘thrill of driving’ without the risk of tickets and high speed crashes that could be associated with Japanese rocket ships and the boy racer brigade. I’ve already suggested the stock response of MX5 but they’re not very keen on convertibles (I’ve suggested a hardtop). What else is out there for 3k that fits this description? E30? Cleo?

Any help would be much appreciated.

In answer to your question, it's the MR2 Turbo that has the worse reputation for being a handful due to the much more powerful engine and similar lack of driver aids. An MR2 GTI (and indeed 99.9% of cars) aren't waiting to bite you at every turn if you're being sensible, just some are more forgiving than others; I've heard of contributors on here who have even managed to drive an MR2 Turbo around a wet sliproad without being killed very much!

OK, that seems reasonable. I would imagine it will have lots of grip though? Hard to explore the limits? I'm probably after something that doesn't exist for the money such as a Westfield XI or well setup MKII escort.....If I found something like that I'd buy it myself!
