Just when I said that I was going to finish all of my projects in progress before starting on enything else.... Along came my son's 'barn find' which is an unfinished kit car.
It is a GTM Coupe which the paperwork describes it as one of the first 13" wheeled kits for a Metro donor. Sold to London in 1985 it has had 4 owners since, all adding a few bits apparently quite well, 'til we acquired it last week.
My first thought is to go back a stage and remove the body to inspect the workmanship properly before getting it running and then hopefully completing the build.
So what does the PH crew think of these kits and does anyone have some advice to give on registering it? Given that we want to finish it 'in period' with the Metro engine and of course no cat. We have a spare '85 Metro lying around as a reg donor if that helps but the last thing we'd want is a new plate.

Has the kit ever been on the road? As in, does the V5 say Metro or GTM on it? If it needs an IVA you will no doubt need to change a fair bit and do a full rebuild. If not, then just restore it as any other car, but only change few major components at a time informing the dvla at every stage, otherwise it could need an IVA as opposed to just a normal restoration, engine change/colour change etc etc. I quite like them though, they are pretty little cars.

There are a few that are coming out of "barns" at the moment.
The biggest problem with the IVA is getting properly marked glass, kitemarks are no longer accepted.

Thanks lads. Ken, that's our car and my son's posting.
Putting 2 + 2 together then it looks as if we need to get the replacement donor engine in for a start and then deal with the glass issue. They say there's a waiver on the glass 'til April 2011.
Might take a trip up to the VOSA station soon and check out what's needed.

The car comes without a V5 but does have a note from the kit manufacturer to confirm their kit number.
Also a photocopied V5 for a Metro whose engine and box appear to be the ones in the car. Wheels are also Metro. Front subframe is Mini but driveshafts and hubs look like Metro.
We also have a spare Metro to break, so based on advice here and the GTM club current thinking is to fit the engine and box from OUR donor car to establish age with a view to dealing with emissions legislation.
Just a pity that there's no way of recovering the previous donor reg on the basis that it was an earlier build! Maybe it's a case of just applying for a new logbook on this old reg.
Our next job will be tracking down a windscreen. Nothing in the instructions about the source of these but BL 11/1300 is a possibility and I think the later models use Citroen Visa.

Thanks Ferg.... That sounds expensive!
It would be worth asking across on GTMdriver as their was a run of heated screens produced, so people may have their old ones available. As for Honda engines, Neil's Nitroed Vtec run a 10.96 quarter this weekend at the pod.
And that's with a full tank, and a toolkit on board !
