I've found a trackday on a date that really suits me that's at Mallory Park. I've never been there before, so just wondered if it was any good, the write-ups on the web seem to suggest it's quite small and possibly a bit narrow. I'm worried that overtaking (sorry that will actually mean being overtaken in may case) may be difficult and I fancy some nice long run-off areas, so if I do lose it I won't be trashing the car into any armco.

I'm a novice who'll be driving a standard MX5, so won't be breaking any records.

mallory is a lovely little track - not as big as some others, having essentially only 4 corners, but just means its easier to learn and have fun on.

Wouldnt worry about passing places - plenty of room to pull over on the pit straight and also the back straight - also, its your call when you let someone past, so as long as you do pull to the right on the straights, stay on your line through the corners.

Yep, cracking little track. It sometimes gets a poor following from trackdayers as it is so much simpler than Oulton/Cadwell etc but there's plenty there to keep you interested for the day and it is unusually grippy in the wet.

Well worth a visit.

Just be careful around the hairpin as the inside is a wall about 2ft high.

I'd have thought an ideal track for beginners, the straights before and after Gerards are ideal for passing and a nice hairpin and the devils elbow after it which is off camber so interesting, enjoy

Yep, one of my favorites, get instruction as the lines through Gerards are not as you would expect, Devil's elbow is an awesome bend blind apex off camber left hander that in my car it is flat in third at around 90, brilliant.

Bit hard on brakes as there are a couple of big stops each lap so make sure they are up to scratch before you go.

Cheers for the advice guys, however, having now tried to book the day it looks like Mallory is full up, so it may be one for the future. Gutted as I planned to do it with Mazda on Track, so would have been good to meet a few other MX5 owners. Looks like I'm off to a sessioned novice day at Oulton Park with MSV instead. It does mean I have to take a day off work, but as I'm only 30 mins away unlike the 2hr drive to Mallory, it sould be alot less hastle.

I wouldn't personally have gone for a sessioned day as they always feel a bit too structured for my taste but Oulton is a great venue so you are bound to have fun there.

I must admit, I'm not that keen on a sessioned day myself, but I don't fancy a open lane MSV day at Oulton being a complete Novice. I went to Oulton a few weeks ago for a taster session. I got there early and watched the full day that had been running and there was some very serious metal on show. It appeared more than half the attendees were race teams doing testing - lots and lots of fully race prepped cars and single seaters. I really don't fancy mixing with those types of cars in my 140bhp Mazda, as I don't want to spend my whole day looking in my mirrors. I'll spend my novice day getting lots of instruction and making sure I know what I'm doing. Then I'd like to do some days at smaller circuits such as Anglesey and Mallory where the attendees appears to be driving more normal cars.

I can't think of anything more worrying than mixing it up on track with nothing but other novices but I know these days are popular and some people feel less intimidated that way.

I'd recommend in at the deep end, most of my early trackdays were in a 100bhp 106 Rallye on MLR days stacked full of Evos laugh. It's surprising what you can keep up with!

I used to love (2000 - 2001) Mallory in my Swiftune 1380 Mini and loved coming out of the hairpin and gunning it to overtake through Devil's Elbow. Some of the top Mini racers did not like it as there was not much run off.

Having had some years off from track days due to very serious health issues I started doing track days again on MSV novice days and there were Caterham race teams there but let me tell you they were not that fast. In fact on my first track day back on track there was a Viper, TVRs, hot Clios etc and I nearly went straight home, but I had a great time.

People say they do not like sessioned novice days but each time you go out on a session you know what you are dealing with, so you know to keep well away from certain cars instead of thinking I have not been on track with him so how is he going to behave. Which means you can focus on your driving.

Cheers, it was the MoT day I wanted to do with them at Mallory on 2nd October (wife & kids away for the weekend) but I believe it's full up. I will definately be doing a MoT day shortly, when I can book a bit further in advance. It's those kind of days that I'm keen to do, and meet a few more MX5 owners.

It is, but other TDO's also attend. I believe MoT have 5 or 6 cars attending.

In the Locost it's a slight lift to unsettle the car going into Gerrards and brake for the hairpin. Aside from that it's flat all the way round. I haven't been there since I was told this but apparently the bump going into Gerrards can be used to get the back end out slightly so you don't even need to lift there.

It might not be flat in the Mazda though and there's not much run off so take care.
