Nuneaton, static cameras

Unless you are a pedestrian you might not notice a single camera unit (looks to have 2 cameras) aimed at both carriageways in Nuneaton just after the Coton Arches roundabout on the A444 heading into town. It's possible they are there to catch the idiots that smash up the glass bus shelters but look to be aimed at the road. I don't think they are are speed cameras. They are mounted high up on a lamp post.
There's also one on a lamp post outside Cash Converters( Queens road) looking into the town, another on Corporation street also looking into Town ( between Central ave and the bis shelter ),opposite the Truvello on Leicester Road bridge -can't see one on Attleburough road ,but suspect they'll be one - there's been a big ANPR operation in town recently ( that what it looks like) - at least two unmarked cars ,one sitting on the Council house island ,and at other times a marked Volvo .The purge is a sort of annual tax disc offensive -usually happening in past years around October .This year they've put up cameras on all the approaches to town -last year they had devices planted in secret locations ,with bikes at strategic points .This year it's more low key ,and some of the cars look too nice to be Police -it's only the occupants that give things away
.Now it's a pity that nothing is seen in some of the other parts of the town .
Have a look at my post 10/09 -http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=113&t=591661&i=240&mid=67655&nmt=Unmarked%20plod

As I posted - now we've got the press release --
http://www.nuneaton-news.co.uk/News/Warning-to-dod...
LAW-BREAKERS trying to keep on the move are being warned `we are watching you' by police.
Generic Online News 4They are keeping watch on all five main entrances into Nuneaton town centre with special spy cameras which can detect if a vehicle has been involved with crime.
Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology has been installed into the CCTV system which keeps watch over the gateways into the town centre.
It checks the number plate of every vehicle that passes by against the national police computer database and, if it is linked to any kind of crime, it sends a warning to Warwickshire Police Force's control room.
Control room staff can then alert officers at Nuneaton Police Station, as well as those working in the CCTV room at the Town Hall, to target the vehicle.
Acting Chief Inspector Chris Walton explained: "If any car has a marker for a criminal offence, such as being stolen, for intelligence purpose or for road traffic offences, such as no tax or insurance, they will be picked up by the cameras.
"Their presence will them be flashed to police communication centre headquarters and information is fed back to the borough."
He warned: "If your car is legitimate you have nothing to worry about, if you come into Nuneaton in a stolen car or one involved in crime, it will be picked up."
Nuneaton is the latest town in Warwickshire to have the ANPR technology fitted into its CCTV system, following hot on the heels of nearby Rugby and Warwick.
It is not yet known whether the CCTV cameras that keep watch over Bedworth town centre will have the technology installed. "
